“Dry batteries are typically built with 10 components and 10 types of raw material compounds. As a product with a very simple structure, it’s the quality of the materials and the engineering expertise in how they are assembled that affects performance the most. For this important reason, we don’t buy materials on the open market; we develop our own, or conduct joint-development with our suppliers. This has resulted in our accumulation of technologies and “know-how”; something no other brand can easily match.”
“We now produce manganese batteries in eight of our factories around the world. Over the last 30 years, we’ve managed to eliminate toxic substances from these batteries. We eliminated mercury in 1991, cadmium in 1993, and lead in 2013. Although the process of making manganese batteries demands complicated techniques that took many years and many difficult challenges to overcome, we succeeded in making these cells safer. Panasonic is the only manufacturer to have achieved this with specified-substance-free batteries produced in eight of our factories. “We designed more than 100 production lines in 13 factories to our own specification, and built some facilities from scratch. We regard facilities as measures, so our factories are our value creators. The challenge is to constantly improve our production so it flows like water. Some of the lines designed by our predecessors are still in operation 50 years on, a legacy of our forerunners. There’s still much to learn from our old facilities, while cutting-edge ideas, technologies, and systems can also give us a lot. By fusing these, we strive to create new value.”

“Our products are tested in several dozen different types of devices to JIS/IEC standards, in addition to our own (even more rigorous) quality standards. Hundreds of thousands of products are tested in our labs each year. We use a wide variety of testing equipment, including discharge devices that enable testing in different conditions, and a storage chamber that simulates every possible environment. Moreover, our Panasonic Energy Division in Indonesia, Panasonic Gobel Energy, has been producing dry batteries since 1972. In 1996, lithium battery manufacturing started.
Thanks to state-of-the-art Japanese technology, over 30 billion batteries have been produced to date in our Indonesian factory.
