RESPECT POLARITY! Make sure to insert the batteries properly, following the symbols showing you the correct way to position the positive (+) and negative (-) ends of the batteries. Many cases with heating or leaking batteries find their origin in wrong polarity.

In the past, Panasonic as a leading manufacturer of batteries has made great efforts to reduce a number of hazardous substances in batteries.
Already in 1985, Panasonic commenced a programme to remove mercury from alkaline batteries, as agreed within the European Portable Battery Industry (EPBA). At that time 1% by weight of mercury was added to these batteries and it was decided that mercury would be reduced in a series of steps to the level where no additions of mercury were made. At that time zinc carbon batteries also contained mercury but at a lower concentration of 0.1% and its removal too was incorporated within the programme. All general purpose batteries sold by EPBA members were mercury free from 1 January 1994. This initiative was undertaken as an entirely voluntary measure by battery producers and at an investment of more than €100 million.
Since 2008, there is European legislation in place which obliges all countries in Europe to ensure the collection and recycling of all batteries. In many of these countries, battery collection systems have been set up by the battery industry itself and Panasonic, as one of the leading battery manufacturers, has been instrumental in this process.

As a result, the amount of batteries collected has increased continuously and significantly in Europe.
In 2015, around 91.000 tonnes of spent batteries were collected in Europe (EEA + Switzerland). This corresponds to a collection rate of 41% of batteries put in the market (POM) across Europe, up from 25% in 2010! (source: EPBA)
Also for battery chargers, which are considered as WEEE (Waste of Electric and Electronic Equipment), and for which comparable collection systems have been set up in the various European countries, collection systems are in place to collect and recycle these appliances at end-of-life.
This is only possible through a combined effort by the consumers bringing in their spent batteries and chargers, and industry and authorities ensuring the safe and responsible treatment and recycling of batteries and chargers.
Panasonic Batteries therefore encourages the separate collection of spent Panasonic batteries and chargers: do not throw such products in the dustbin but use the available take-back systems to return them, in order to have them properly recycled.
Indeed, many of the components of these products can be recycled, avoiding the release of hazardous substances to the environment and, in addition, providing valuable materials to important products and production processes in Europe!
Battery and appliance (charger) recycling technologies are widely available throughout Europe and are bound by applicable legal requirements in terms of safety, minimum content to be recycled etc… You will be supporting a cleaner environment when bringing back your products!
