In winter, why did the battery for hearing aid come to the end much earlier than other seasons?

Due to different materials, zinc air hearing aid batteries operate differently than other batteries. To use your zinc air batteries optimally, it’s important to know the battery’s characteristics.

How does a zinc air battery work?

To generate electricity, zinc (cathode) reacts with oxygen (anode). The air flows into the cell through small holes on the downside of the battery. As with every battery technology, its lifespan varies depending on the condition in which the battery is used. Panasonic zinc air batteries do have a larger capacity than other batteries of the same size (e.g. silver oxide), however.

How do I use zinc air batteries correctly?

Before inserting, wait at least 30 seconds after pulling off the seal. In colder temperatures, wait about 60 seconds. If you change your mind and not use the battery soon, reapply the same seal. Never use scotch tape or anything similar to close off airflow.

If you want to measure the remaining battery capacity, use a meter specifically designed for hearing aid batteries. An ordinary tester will not provide accurate results.

Additional remarks:

  • If the battery is cold, warm it up gently by holding it in your hands for a few minutes.
  • For optimal effects, make sure the area is well ventilated. Any ‘pollutant’ may jeopardise battery life.
  • Avoid dry environments (e.g. driers or near air dehumidifiers), as that will dry out moisture inside the battery, which in turn will shorten battery life. The same applies for drier cases. Always remove the battery before drying. Reapply the seal until you reinsert it.
  • When replacing zinc air batteries, never do so near heating appliances (e.g. stoves). As the battery ‘breathes’ to release energy, the additional carbon dioxide in the air will deteriorate battery performance. Try replacing batteries in a well ventilated area.
  • Always avoid areas that are warm, dry and badly ventilated.
