Each battery has specific characteristics, depending on their chemical composition. Zinc carbon is a cheap battery for basic low-drain devices. Alkaline deliver good, dependable power (usable for any type of device, depending on the alkaline type). Lithium technology is a stable technology for smaller, yet demanding appliances. In general, appliances are designed to match the characteristics of dry batteries and to work within the voltage range of 1.5V to 0.9V. Thanks to this characteristic, Ni-MH rechargeable batteries can be used in appliances which require alkaline batteries, even with lower initial voltage. 
Never use Ni-MH rechargeable batteries for waterproof appliances, appliances specifically designed for alkaline batteries, or in appliances with battery indicators.
